Some of it is really excellent, and some of it reads like it was submitted as a first draft and published quickly, which I suppose is possible given the pulp environment in which it flourished. But he was trying hard to strip his language down, I've always thought -- not quite Hemingwayesque, but moving towards it. Gruber is good at saying a lot in a few words.
