Although personally pretty much at odds with much of the man's thinking, his was a remarkable career and well worth celebrating.

SergioAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137677673775151256.post-67959789808286118912012-10-27T14:07:42.253-07:002012-10-27T14:07:42.253-07:00Jacques Barzun lived the dream-life of a mystery f...Jacques Barzun lived the dream-life of a mystery fan! He read Sherlock Holmes when they first appeared in the Strand, he was a contemporary of the Greats of the Golden Age and was an important mystery critic who lived long after his 100th birthday (and didn't he share his centenary with Carr?).

Thanks for this insightful tribute, Curt!
TomCathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03415176301265218101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137677673775151256.post-54341731469734476262012-10-27T08:19:40.024-07:002012-10-27T08:19:40.024-07:00As much as I differ with Barzun about crime fictio...As much as I differ with Barzun about crime fiction as a whole and still believe he was a thorough snob and a chauvinist (if not a true dilettante), I have to say that his picks for his two series of Top 50 Detective Novels have always been excellent choices in terms of story, writing and sometimes plot ingenuity. I am still making my way through the later picks from 1950 onwards. I never would've discovered amazing books like SUCH FRIENDS ARE DANGEROUS and the books of P.M. Hubbard if it were not for Barzun's reprint series.

He definitely made a lasting mark in the appreciation, history, and preservation of the genre.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137677673775151256.post-22811260218867349192012-10-27T06:21:57.313-07:002012-10-27T06:21:57.313-07:00An insightful tribute to the great man, Curt.An insightful tribute to the great man, Curt.Black Pipehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17778842999672886878noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137677673775151256.post-49856947389593228062012-10-27T05:00:48.948-07:002012-10-27T05:00:48.948-07:00Curt, this is an excellent tribute to a great man....Curt, this is an excellent tribute to a great man.Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01844617192737950378noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137677673775151256.post-24031039953407257872012-10-26T17:41:26.770-07:002012-10-26T17:41:26.770-07:00 This is a lovely tribute.
