The Passing Tramp Passes for a Time

My wonderful mother's stage one breast cancer from 2013 the doctor thinks has spread to her liver.  She has a biopsy today.  I am so down right now probably won't be posting much on the blog for a while.  Lots of concern with how this was handled.  She's 85, but she was in great shape, physically and mentally.  I know a lot of people my age have been having these sorts of issues with parents and I now personally know your grief.  Love to you all, and to your parents.  I hope I will find my way toward blogging here again in the future.

  4. Very sorry to hear this. It'll be a difficult time for both you and your mother. My brother and I are dealing a similar situation with our 92-year-old mother who's doubling down with signs of dementia on top of the frailty. Take care of yourself and just do what you can. We'll be here when you come back. You can always post the occasional health update and be re-assure that you're not the only dealing with parental problems. Take care.

  8. Dear Curt - I am so sorry to hear this. I would love to sent you a rather odd book by Margery Allingham and myself based on both our experiences (50 years apart) caring for our mothers in old age and with illness. Reading and thinking about what Margery suggested remains a great comfort to me and a help in thinking of the passing of generations. He share of "our" book is called the Relay and the core of it is about the handing on between generations. And also the equal importance of seeing someone lovingly out of the world as well as into it. If you woudl accept this book, please email me your postal address. My email is julia-jones@talk21.com I shan't be offended if you don't want it. Shall be thinking of you and your mother anyway

    1. Thanks, Julia. I think what is making things so extra hard for me is that the doctors did not do radiation after the the stage one lumpectomy, but rather endocrine therapy. They only did radiation after a stage one cancer returned in the same place the nexy year. I can't help feeling if they had just done radiation in the first place we would not be here now. The endocrine therapy seems to have been utter shite, as you say in UK. It makes me so mad and sad and frustrated all at the same time. It makes me just want to beat my head against the wall.

  9. Dear Curt, I have enjoyed your posts since discovering your blog last year shortly after I was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer. I know what it feels like to have your world suddenly cave in. Take care of your mom, and take care of yourself. Try to enjoy this time with her. This blog and your work will be waiting for you. If caring thoughts and good wishes can help, know you have loads from me to help give you strength. Kathy Whalen

    1. I'm sorry to hear about your breast cancer, Kathy, and thanks so much for your kind words. I like blogging and working with reprinting necause I know it brings some enjoyment to some people, and I will try to keep posting, but it's had to concentrate like I would like, I have to admit. So I thought I should explain to people.

  13. I have only recently discovered your blog, and I love it. But I too have been in your position, needing to focus my time and energy on caring for a parent or other loved one, and I have just one piece of advice. Be sure to take care of yourself so that you will have the strength to take care of your Mom. We will hope that she has a positive outcome, and we'll all be here when you return.

  16. Very sorry to hear this, Curt. Both of my parents had dementia in their mid-80s. It is very difficult to deal with a parent's health issues. Take care of yourself too.

    1. Thank you so very much for this comment, it was kind of you and I'm glad you enjoy the blog. I told my Mom. My parents both really enjoyed the most recent Nero Wolfe series, he's one of my favorite writers. I have done a goodly number of posts about him on the blog, as you probably know, especially from 2014. A great figure in the genre and a fascinating man.

  22. I'm sorry I'm late to the news as I let my blogging habits slip away. My mother was a breast cancer survivor for eight years until she died January 30th of last year at 60 when the cancer spread to her liver. My aunt, her older sister, is also battling cancer in the lungs currently. I'm so sorry for your mother and what you're going through.
