I've always been very, very suspicious of making deductions about an author's character from his/her writing, but my gaydar has never been very good. I thought Toni Fennelly was a man for years!<br />Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137677673775151256.post-22657442763884422982014-04-25T09:02:55.788-07:002014-04-25T09:02:55.788-07:00I've read plenty of Aaron Marc Stein's Geo...I've read plenty of Aaron Marc Stein's George Bagby mysteries over the years. I never got that sense with Van Dine, even with all Philo's little ways. And I'm not sure many gay men would want Philo Vance! ;)The Passing Tramphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09830680639601570152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137677673775151256.post-21842013295081009282014-04-24T18:08:49.004-07:002014-04-24T18:08:49.004-07:00Another fine post, and I'm looking forward to ...Another fine post, and I'm looking forward to your post on the mystery fiction. I'm curious about what you think are "suggestive elements" in the works. My "gaydar" doesn't seem very good in these matters; I always had my suspicions about S. S. Van Dine, because -- to misquote Ogden Nash -- Philo Vance/was such a big nance. But I understand his biographer asserts that SSVD was an enthusiastic heterosexual, as they say; so that was likely a matter of a difference in social milieu/time frame. Your comments (or quotations) would be interesting.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
