I loved reading your reviews of these books. I will most definitely have to re-read SHUDDER in light of your comments as I think my memory of it is just too nebulous. Agree whole-heartedly about the others. I also would have assumed that the March story was actually published later that READER IS WARNED but John is clearly right in that it predates it - fascinating stuff as always.

SergioAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137677673775151256.post-64972825838145068522012-06-11T16:37:15.801-07:002012-06-11T16:37:15.801-07:00Yeah, John, I'm not a big fan of Eight of Swor...Yeah, John, I'm not a big fan of Eight of Swords I'm afraid. I feel Carr didn't come quite together until about 1935 or so. Then from then until the mid-1940s it's an amazing run.

When was The Empty House originally published? I suppose this is in Doug's bio, should check that, also your review. The Passing Tramphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09830680639601570152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137677673775151256.post-79265580056014185012012-06-11T08:01:41.184-07:002012-06-11T08:01:41.184-07:00Also, the murder method in THE READER IS WARNED is...Also, the murder method in THE READER IS WARNED is exactly the same as one used in an earlier story "The Empty House" featuring Colonel March which was purposefully omitted from the original edition of THE DEPARTMENT OF QUEER COMPLAINTS. It was later added inteh reissued version put together by Doug Greene for IPL. I found a cheap paperback copy of ...SHUDDER last year and have it in a bag. Somewhere. Guess I should go hunting for it and make it my next Carr read. I just read THE EIGHT OF SWORDS and would say it's one of those Dr. Fell books that is high on farce and oddball humor but not exactly the best of his detective plots. Has an interesting passage about Carr's feelings for critics who denigrate the kind of books he writes. The character of Henry Morgan, a mystery writer, seems to be a Carr stand in. I found my attention wavering as many of the puzzling elements in THE EIGHT OF SWORDS were solved bit by bit while many "digressions" (as Morgan refers to them) impeded the action. The final reveal was, I thought, underwhelming. One of the few of Carr's books that was easily guessed by me if not completely figured out.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.com
